چکیده

Objective: The estimation of perceptive thresholds is a basic element of psychoacoustics. One of the drawbacks of commonly used adaptive algorithms is the lack of reliability when the behavioral response is not robust. To address this issue an adaptive algorithm, TEMA (Threshold Estimation by Managed Algorithm), has been developed. Design: TEMA seeks the 50% point on the psychometric curve based on an up-down staircase procedure. Internal controls and stochastic processes aim at enhancing the reliability. The development of TEMA is described, together with its validations with reference to common adaptive procedures. Both Monte Carlo simulations and real subject testing were performed to assess the psychoacoustic threshold in intonation perception tests and the number of stimulus presentations needed. Study sample: A total of 29 adult listeners participated in the within-subjects comparison; 19 listeners had normal-hearing, the other 10 were hearing impaired (5 aided, 5 unaided). Results: The results show that TEMA outperformed commonly used algorithms in non-robust responders, with a minimal cost in terms of test duration. Conclusions: TEMA’s adaptive algorithm was shown to be significantly more resistant to gambling or cheating behavior and threshold drift than traditional, reversal-based algorithms. TEMA increases the accuracy of threshold estimation and the test reliability in non-robust responders. This makes TEMA applicable for automated threshold measurements in clinical settings. Efficient estimation of sensory thresholds with ML-PEST.

A set of C and C+2 routines are described that allow the efficient estimation of sensory thresholds in psychophysical experiments using a maximum-likelihood staircase procedure. They have been used effectively in visual, auditory, gustatory, and olfactory psychophysics.

A Model of Early Visual Processing

We propose a model for early visual processing in primates. The model consists of a population of linear spatial filters which interact through non-linear excitatory and inhibitory pooling. Statistical estimation theory is then used to derive human psychophysical thresholds from the responses of the entire population of units. The model is able to reproduce human thresholds for contrast and ori...

Event-Related Potentials Allow for Optotype-Based Objective Acuity Estimation.

PURPOSE The event-related potential P300 has been proposed for objective acuity estimation. In contrast to the acuity VEP, which relies on grating or checkerboard stimuli, the P300 can be recorded to small stimulus differences, making it suitable to use optotype stimuli. This may result in a better agreement with subjective measures of acuity than that found with VEP-based estimates. We tested ...

Estimating chromatic contrast thresholds from the transient visual evoked potential

Chromatic contrast thresholds may be estimated from transient VEPs by measuring the peak-to-peak amplitude at a range of stimulus levels followed by extrapolation to zero amplitude. However, there have been reports of failure of this technique when applied to the transient chromatic VEP due to variability of amplitude, difficulties with component identification and poor correlation of amplitude...

Human auditory brainstem response to temporal gaps in noise.

Gap detection is a commonly used measure of temporal resolution, although the mechanisms underlying gap detection are not well understood. To the extent that gap detection depends on processes within, or peripheral to, the auditory brainstem, one would predict that a measure of gap threshold based on the auditory brainstem response (ABR) would be similar to the psychophysical gap detection thre...
